Selecting a van line is one of the most important decisions you'll make. Knowing how a van line operates not only will help you in selecting a mover, but will also be useful when you're in the midst of your move.

This is due to the manner in which interstate moves will be handled. For most interstate moves, more than one van line agency is involved in the move. It is also part of a very tightly and carefully coordinated agency network that provides flexibility and efficiency to both the moving public and the moving industry.

When you select a mover, more often than not, you will select a local agent of a national van line. This company is referred to as the booking agent.

They register the move with their van line, who, in turn, assigns it to an interstate van carrying loads in the same direction as your move. The van is owned and operated by the hauling agent. Along a typical route, a driver may pick up and deliver several shipments along the way. (Don't worry that your goods will be mixed up with another family's shipment; van lines employ sophisticated techniques to identify different customer's possessions and to keep them separate inside the van. Thanks to special designs, equipment, and loading techniques, moving vans can accommodate much more furniture and boxes than most people realize).

At the end of the move, a local destination agent completes all the final details, including paperwork. They will also handle the unpacking and removal of the empty cartons and packing materials, if so ordered.

In those cases where your move is booked through an agency outside of your city (for example, your employer's headquarters in a distant city), a local agent would be appointed as the origin agent by the van line. This agency would handle estimates, billing, and any special services required at the origin residence, such as packing.
